There are many aspects to a business. We’ve talked about many of them on here. I’ve found that the best way to handle dealing with all of them is by putting them into a notebook. It can be a physical or virtual notebook, but I’ve found that having everything in one place helps me keep track of everything that is important to me and that I need to follow up on. I have a few supplement software tools that I use to keep me on track and in case I can’t have my notebook with me, but for the most part, it’s all included in one notebook.
Use the Notebook!
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably guilty of setting up several notebooks for various uses and then walking away. Don’t set this one up and then forget about it. Actually use it! There’s obviously something that isn’t clicking correctly and using this notebook everyday for everything can actually highlight what it is. It can literally help you improve your business. Yes, a silly little notebook can do all of that.
If you’re asking what should go into this magically notebook, then you should know that the answer is everything. Any ideas you have about products go in. Any sketches you’ve drawn out should either be added in or drawn directly in. If you find any quotes you love, set up a section in your notebook to house them. If you have any thoughts at all about things you want to do or how you want to run your business, it should go in your notebook.
Set Up Your Notebook
Remember when we said you could use a physical or a virtual notebook? Well, now’s the time to decide. Make sure it’s something that makes you excited to look at. I currently use a Staples Arc’ed notebook, but as soon as 2017 starts, I’m going to be moving into a Leuchtturm 1917. I love my Arc notebook and the flexibility it provides, but using a Leuchtturm is going to help me keep track of my numbers and ideas better. My brain responds to the size and the look of a Leuchtturm and I get so excited to look at it that I find myself flipping through the pages aimlessly.
The first thing you should do, no matter what type of notebook you use, should be to make an index. If you’re online and using something like Evernote, you can actually create a note that acts like an index. Check out this article for a walk through on how to do that. If you are using Google Drive as a notebook, I would add a number in front of every document and spreadsheet. Even if you don’t have a separate spreadsheet or document with the list of items in the Drive, Google will organize them in numerical order and that can be a type of index in itself.
Next up, if you’re the type of person who needs to see everything laid out on a calendar, you need to add one. This should be a regular notebook. You don’t want to add your business notebook into a planner because you want space to sketch and add notes that don’t have a designated place. Again, if you’re online, I would use Google Calendar. There isn’t much more that I can help you with on this. It’s all about what works best for you and how your brain works. Honestly, if I could set up the notebook for you and send it to you, I would because I enjoy that type of thing, but I can’t. It’s all up to you. That being said, I have a few recommendations on what types of sections you should add.
You absolutely don’t need to add any of these. You may not need any of these for your type of business. You may find that you actually need to flush some of the sections out so that you have more room within each section. Again, it’s all up to you. This is your notebook and you’re the one who is going to be using it everyday. It needs to make sense to you.

These are just some of the ideas that I’ve used in my notebook. It’s whatever you want to do. Make sure that no matter what you put in it, it’s going to be something you enjoy and will actually help improve your business overall. After all, that’s the whole point of creating something like this.
